Insomnia associated with more suicidal thoughts, worse disease symptoms in schizophrenia

Insomnia is a common problem in patients with schizophrenia, and a new study reinforces a close association between insomnia, more suicidal thoughts and actions and increased problems like anxiety and depression in these patients.
It also provides more evidence that keeping tabs on how patients are sleeping and intervening when needed is important to their overall care.
We are now aware that significant insomnia is putting our patients at even higher risk for suicide, so if they are having changes in sleep patterns, if they are having significant insomnia, then we really need to hone in on those questions even more related to suicidal thinking and do what we can to help, says Dr. Brian Miller, psychiatrist and schizophrenia expert at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. ....

New research suggests anxiety among men transitioning into parenthood is significantly higher than reported by the global World Health Organization (WHO) regional prevalence rates.
In a new study published in
The Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers from the Colorado School of Public Health on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus studied the prevalence of anxiety among fathers during the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy through the first year of postpartum.
The transition to parenthood is a major life event that s often accompanied with new challenges related to financial, relationship, and work-life balance concerns. Autistic adults can be wrongly perceived as deceptive and lacking credibility, Flinders University researchers say, with this working against many caught in the legal system.
Ahead of World Autism Awareness Day (2 April 2021), a new paper in the
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders asked 1,410 civilians to respond to video recordings with 30 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and 29 non-ASD individuals to examine whether stereotypical behaviors associated with autism influenced people s perceptions of the individual.
Common behaviors include gaze aversion, repetitive body movements, literal interpretations of figurative language and poor reciprocity.

When we watch a mime seemingly pull rope, climb steps or try to escape that infernal box, we don t struggle to recognize the implied objects our minds automatically see them, a new study concludes.
To explore how the mind processes the objects mimes seem to interact with, Johns Hopkins University cognitive scientists brought the art of miming into the lab, concluding that invisible, implied surfaces are represented rapidly and automatically. The work appears today in the journal
Psychological Science.
Most of the time, we know which objects are around us because we can just see them directly.
