Systemic racism, police brutality against Black people drive protests

Yet it takes just one look at the signs that many protesters carry  such as “Columbus is Not Safe for Black People” and  “The Whole Damn System is Guilty As Hell”  to see that the protests represent pain and anger that have grown over many decades.
They are an expression, activists and experts say,
 of the collective frustration that has built up in the Black community for being held down by systemic inequities in American institutions. Those institutions include housing, education, banking and government, but the results of this racism are felt most sharply and consequentially when it comes to law enforcement. ....

Event mostly somber
The event was mostly somber, as a socially distanced crowd stood before markerboards with the names of about 30 other people killed by police in the Columbus area and central Ohio from 1970 to the present.
Police were stationed nearby during the event, but kept a low profile like a bicycle patrol camped out near the North Market.
White people are not better than black people
Brittany Koresch, 35, attended the event with a group of about five Quakers from the Columbus area.
One of the Quaker tenets is integrity and equality, Koresch said. White people are not better than black people. ....

Pro-Trump event postpones two rallies in honor of Blacks killed


Weekend demonstrations to honor Black people killed by police have been paused as the city prepares for an “armed march” by pro-Trump supporters at the Ohio Statehouse.
A rally in honor of Andre Hill, a Black man killed by Columbus Police officer Adam Coy  on Dec. 22, was scheduled at City Hall at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
However, Hill’s sister, Shawna Barnett, announced that the event was canceled via a Facebook post on Wednesday. Barnett said the event was canceled because of safety concerns.
Additionally, the People’s Justice Project (PJP), in collaboration with the Black Abolitionist Collective of Ohio, Central Ohio Freedom Fund and Showing Up for Racial Justice had planned a “Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Action,” which included a Black Lives Matter march and rally on Saturday in Goodale Park. ....

The Columbus, Ohio, officer who killed Andre Hill has been fired | The Crusader Newspaper Group

Adam Coy, the Columbus, Ohio, police officer who shot and killed Andre Hill, was fired Monday, according to a statement from Public Safety Director Ned Pettus Jr.
Coy’s termination follows a disciplinary hearing held earlier in the day. The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police represented him at the hearing.
“The information, evidence and representations made by Chief (Thomas) Quinlan as the investigator are, in my opinion, indisputable. His disciplinary recommendation is well-supported and appropriate,” Pettus said. “The actions of Adam Coy do not live up to the oath of a Columbus Police officer, or the standards we, and the community, demand of our officers.” ....
