Judas and the Black Messiah true story: What's fact and what's fiction in the Fred Hampton assassination movie.

Judas and the Black Messiah is based on the true story of FBI informant William O’Neal and his role in the 1969 killing of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. It took years for the facts around Hampton’s killing to become public, thanks to a vigorous government effort to cover them up. While the movie, directed by Shaka King from a screenplay he wrote with Will Berson, stays relatively faithful to history, it does take some liberties with the historical record including by filling in some of its blanks. Here’s what’s real and what’s invented. ....

William O Neal s secret life came to an end three years after the Chicago police raid that killed charismatic Black Panther leader Fred Hampton.
In a front-page story on Feb. 3, 1973, the Chicago Tribune identified O Neal, the onetime Black Panther security chief, as an informant who aided the FBI in an investigation of a murder ring operated by current and former members of the Chicago Police Department.
In addition to being the key government tipster in the case, the Tribune reported, O Neal may have witnessed one of the slayings last May of two men who allegedly were killed by policemen and former policemen. ....

Judas and the Black Messiah has the all the trappings of a genre movie it’s a gritty crime thriller that unfolds on the tense stage of an anti-police revolution but it shouldn’t be underestimated as a history lesson. In its true story of how informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) infiltrated the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s, director Shaka King’s film highlights historical details and lives that have rarely been given mainstream focus. Along with reckoning with the horrific assassination of party chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) by Chicago Police, the FBI, and the State’s Attorney’s Office, the film also celebrates Hampton’s power as an orator and man of the people, as well as the impact of his organization on the city of Chicago: the breakfast programs, the free healthcare, the Rainbow Coal ....

Introduction
Fifty-one years ago this past week, Illinois Black Panther leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were slain by the Chicago police in a murderous pre-dawn raid. Over the next five decades the Hampton and Clark families, their lawyers, the Black Panther Party, movement activists, honest reporters and documentary filmmakers, and peoples’ historians have waged a continuous battle to uncover and speak the truth about Fred Hampton, the BPP, and the December 4th raid. These intergenerational and interracial efforts have led to a changing of the historical narrative from a shoot-out between the Panthers and the police, to a “shoot in” where the police fired more than 90 shots to one by the Panthers, then to a murder of Fred Hampton while he slept, drugged, i ....
