ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- An man who has spoken out about police brutality was arrested at a crime scene Wednesday.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff s Office released video from a lapel camera that shows White being confrontational with deputies.
My name is Clifton White. What are you going to do, he asked the deputy.
In both cases, things escalated.
Laquonte Barry, who founded the Black New Mexico movement, said Clifton doesn t represent what he s fighting for.
His group has the attention of the Albuquerque mayor s office and APD as they work to continue the conversation about racial injustice in policing. ....

After months of calling for cuts in police budgets, activists in Albuquerque, New Mexico, were dismayed to hear about Mayor Tim Keller’s plan for the $56 million in Covid-19 relief on its way from Washington.
In April, Keller proposed earmarking more than 15 percent of the funds for the Albuquerque Police Department: $3 million to expand a gunshot detection system, $5 million to refurbish station houses, $1 million for new cars and $450,000 to recruit more officers. A Keller spokesman said this week that the money was part of a plan “to make our community safer and healthier for everyone.” ....

APD launches ambassador program to build trust with various communities

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- A new program is being launched in Albuquerque to help bridge the gap between police and communities that may not completely trust officers.
For us, this really is a part of a new way going forward for law enforcement, said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.
The APD Ambassador Program will designate an officer for refugees, Hispanics, Asians, veterans, LGBTQ+ and African American communities.
Members of the Black New Mexico Movement, an advocacy group, is cautiously optimistic that the program will help mend relationships.
I mean, everything so far sounds good, looks good. It s happening. At this point, it s the first step, said Torrance Green of the Black New Mexico Movement. We ll see what happens next, we ll see what happens in the future. But, it s good to see the see city, APD, working together looking for a solution and at least trying. ....
