Walk for Warmth raises funds for utility assistance programs

RAPID CITY, S.D. Temperatures warmed up just in time for the Salvation Army’s tenth annual Walk for Warmth. On Saturday afternoon, large groups of all ages could be seen walking around Main Street Square – and it was all for a great cause.
“We’re raising funds and awareness of the need that many families face for financial assistance with their utility bills during the coldest months of the year,” said Javier Moreno, Black Hills Area Coordinator for the Salvation Army.
Funds from registration will go directly to utility assistance programs at the Salvation Army for families in need. For those who couldn’t participate, there was also an option to round-up purchases at the Salvation Army in both Rapid City and Spearfish. ....

Two gold coins worth an estimated $1,800 each found in Salvation Army kettles

A mysterious benefactorâs gift of two gold coins in Salvation Army red kettles is especially needed this Christmas season. The Salvation Army of the Black Hills reports that requests for help have increased between 200% and 250% this year.
Every year for 24 years, someone has donated a 1983 Robert Frost 1-ounce gold coin in a Salvation Army red kettle at a Northern Hills location. The coin always comes wrapped in a Peanuts comic strip with a note or saying. This year, the coin was left at Walgreens in Spearfish.
âThis year the individual drew masks on the Peanuts characters to make it a little more relatable,â said Javier Moreno, Black Hills Area Coordinator for the Salvation Army of the Black Hills. ....

The Black Hills Area Salvation Army expects to serve over 6,000 individuals during the holiday season.
The organization reports that they have raised 62% of their campaign goal – they need an additional $130,000 to raise until the end of the year.
Capt. Javier Moreno, Black Hills Area Coordinator of Salvation Army, says, “It is quite a big task that we have ahead of us, but you know, we have seen the generosity throughout these past days and how they have really come through, and so we have cautious optimism about reaching our goal this year.” ....

Salvation Army receives first gold coin of the year

RAPID CITY, S.D. The Salvation Army received its first gold coin in one of their red kettles, keeping with the tradition of someone anonymously donating gold coins for the last 24 years.
Capt. Javier Moreno, Black Hills Area Coordinator with the Salvation Army, says they typically get a gold coin in a Rapid City red kettle as well as one in the Northern Hills area which they have not received yet.
The one-ounce gold coin was dropped off Wednesday at the North Lacrosse Walmart, and it is valued at about $1,800.
Since the Salvation Army is under their fundraising goal this year, that money will come in handy. The Salvation Army is also in need of more bell ringers, with the last day being Dec. 24. ....
