Japanese shares end lower on year-end positioning, rising U.S. yields

TOKYO, March 8 (Reuters) - Japanese shares reversed course to end lower on Monday as some investors adjusted positions ahead of the end of the fiscal year, while concerns over rising U.S. bond yields also weighed on sentiment.
The Nikkei share average fell 0.42% to close at 28,743.25, while the broader Topix edged down 0.14% to 1,893.58.
“Investors are trying to take advantage of the recent rally to adjust their positions toward the end of the fiscal year in March,” said Takashi Hiroki, chief strategist, Monex Securities.
Japanese shares made a strong start to 2021, with the Nikkei touching 30,000 level for the first time in 30 years last month on optimism over COVID-19 vaccine rollouts and an economic recovery. ....

Ten years after the devastating Christchurch earthquake, structural engineer Dr Dmytro Dizhur has launched a book about what happens to old brick buildings when the ground starts shaking.
Dizhur has been a familiar figure in Whanganui. He came here often during his research into techniques for securing old brick buildings against earthquakes. In 2013, he even bought one - the Johnstone & Co building next to Whanganui City Bridge. ....

Lender to U.S. electric co-ops carries $4 bln in exposure to waylaid Texas market

BOSTON, March 5 (Reuters) - A go-to lender for U.S. electric cooperatives has $4 billion in exposure to the Texas market, where last month’s deep freeze slammed the finances of several co-ops hit with astronomically high gas and electric prices during the state’s grid blackout.
The latest quarterly financial disclosure from the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC) shows the Texas market accounts for 15% of the lender’s $27.1 billion in outstanding loans. Dulles, Virginia-based CFC has not had any loan defaults in its electric utility loan portfolio since fiscal 2013.
Numerous Texas electric co-ops are facing potential bankruptcy due to the massive bills incurred when power prices spiked during the Texas freeze that killed several dozen people and left millions without power for days. ....
