Lifelong Republican Jennifer Ellis almost doesn’t even recognize her own political party when she looks at some of Idaho’s far-right legislators that dominated the agenda this session.
“This far-right faction seems to be getting more traction and getting more people elected than ever before,” Ellis, a Blackfoot rancher, said in a telephone interview.  ....

After outcry from child care providers, Idaho lawmakers approve federal relief funding

BOISE — Child care providers, parents and children filled Idaho’s Capitol Rotunda on Monday and sat in on Tuesday’s Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee meeting.
Their presence was impossible to ignore, and on Wednesday, lawmakers took favorable action on more than $100 million in COVID-19 relief funds that Idaho Gov. Brad Little recommended go toward support of the state’s hard-hit child care industry. That money comes out of the nearly $1.2 billion in American Rescue Plan Act money that Idaho received from the federal government after ARPA was signed in March.
House Bills 369, 395 and 400 are now headed to the governor’s desk after passing easily in the Senate on Wednesday evening. HB 369 passed by a vote of 30-5, HB 395 by a vote of 32-3 and HB 400 by a vote of 33-2. ....

House passes all three stalled child-care aid bills, sends to Senate

BOISE — The Idaho House late Tuesday passed all three bills authorizing federal aid to help the state’s struggling child care industry, sending the long-stalled measures to the Senate.
“It’s really important for our low-income families to be able to return to the workforce,” Rep. Caroline Nilsson Troy, R-Genesee, the bills’ sponsor, told the House. “We can’t afford to lose any more of those child care facilities. … This has really become probably the tightest sticking point in the state, really, for our state workforce to return to work.
The funds had been stalled for much of the legislative session, prompting concerned child care providers and parents, many with babies, toddlers or young kids in tow, to fill the Capitol rotunda and gather with strollers on the Capitol steps on Monday to urge lawmakers to approve the funds. Day care centers across the Treasure Valley closed for the day to focus on getting the message to lawmake ....

May 4 Idaho lawmakers found a solution to getting education budgets over the finish line: Cut $2.1 million from university budgets.
A new measure, House Bill 387, was negotiated among Republican lawmakers as they tried to quell fears from a faction of legislators over universities teaching about critical race theory and providing other social justice programs. The cut, along with a bill against critical race theory, helped garner enough votes in the House to approve education budgets.
Senators in a 25-8 vote on Tuesday supported the bill, which previously passed the House and will now need Gov. Brad Little s signature. The legislation would provide nearly $629.9 million for colleges and universities for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. It would cut $500,000 each from the University of Idaho and Idaho State University and ....
