Marti Deyo is still moving into her new position and office at the Malheur Extension Office, but on Friday was busy preparing for a planning session with local 4-H leaders.
Deyo, 39, took over the position of 4-H program coordinator/youth development, for the Oregon State University Extension Service in Maheur County on Feb. 15. Already, she is planning an assessment with 4-H leaders, members, 4-H alumni and other members of the community to discuss needs in the program and in the community to plan the direction of the program.
Born and raised in Orofino, Idaho, Deyo said she was involved in 4-H as a club member for nine years and was involved in just about every 4-H project there was at the time, except animals. One year she had 13 projects, she said. ....

LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement recently sent out exit test scores to all the school systems in the state. Lee County teachers of English as a second language said their second place achievement surprises them.
English instructor Ami Patel said compared to bigger cities, like Atlanta and Gwinnett County, who have diverse communities, winning an accolade of this sort wasn’t expected.
Students can start this program from Kindergarten to 12th grade, after an access test for the program, which can be done at any age. It’s based on how proficient the student is. ....

Schools in Roanoke, New River valleys see increase in failing grades during virtual learning


School divisions in the Roanoke and New River valleys reported an uptick in failing grades during the first half of the 2020-21 school year, reflecting a national trend, as students continued to learn in nontraditional ways amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data shared by local districts.
The increase was not uniform across all grade levels, instructional methods and demographics. Virtual learners experienced higher levels, and secondary schools reported more F’s than elementary schools, on average.
Schools are using the data to provide targeted instruction and additional support to those students. Several area divisions are in the process of increasing in-person instruction for the fourth quarter of the school year. School officials also say they are trying to support their students’ mental health and safety, too. ....
