DOH-Lee rescinds multiple red tide health alerts

Today, the Florida Department of Health in Lee County rescinded healths alert for the red tide bloom near Bonita Springs Beach Park, Little Hickory Island Beach Access, Lover’s Key State Park, Fort Myers Beach (Beach Access 13), Lynn Hall Beach Park, Lighthouse Beach Park and Tarpon Bay Road Beach Access.
According to the DOH-Lee, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Website reported that red tide is not present or is at background levels near the listed beach parks and beach accesses.
Florida Poison Control Centers have a toll-free 24/7 Hotline for reporting of illnesses, including health effects from exposure to red tide at 800-222-1222. ....

Health alert issued for Lighthouse Beach Park, Tarpon Bay Road Beach

Today, the Florida Department of Health in Lee County notified the public of a red tide bloom near Lighthouse Beach Park and Tarpon Bay Road Beach on Sanibel.
Some people may have mild and short-lived respiratory symptoms, such as eye, nose and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms. Some individuals with breathing problems, such as asthma, might experience more severe symptoms.
The symptoms usually go away when a person leaves the area or goes indoors. Health officials recommend that people experiencing these symptoms stay away from beach areas or go into an air-conditioned space. If symptoms do not subside, contact your health care provider for evaluation. ....

Red tide's impact on our air quality


Across Southwest Florida, we are starting to see the impacts of red tide on our coasts. But since the conditions are worsening, it’s also impacting the air we breathe.
Lea Edwards came to Southwest Florida to visit with family and said, “Right away, I think you can notice the smell.”
