The visit of Japanese Ambassador to India Satoshi Sukuzi and India s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Guwahati to take part in a daylong conclave on Act East Policy has put the spotlight on the infrastructure projects implemented in Assam with Japanese assistance. However, poor pace of progress of work of two Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-assisted water supply projects for Guwahati city has cast a shadow of gloom over upcoming JICA-assisted projects in the state. Both the Japanese Ambassador and the Indian External Affairs Minister visited the JICA-Assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project at Kharghuli to take stock of the progress. EAM pitches for connectivity from Arabian Sea to South China Sea

India is working on a number of connectivity projects to connect northeast with East Asia
Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has pitched for connectivity from the Arabian Sea to the South China Sea even as New Delhi and Tokyo work together in tandem.
Speaking at an event in Guwahati, Jaishankar said, approach to create connectivity to and within Assam, beyond to the North-East, then to neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh, but eventually push all the way by road, by sea, by air to Vietnam, to Japan.
India is working on a number of connectivity projects to connect northeast with East Asia. These include India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, with an aim to expand it to Vietnam via Laos. ....

Efforts are on for more foreign investment in Assam: Jaishankar

(MENAFN - IANS) p>Guwahati, Feb 15 (IANS) External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar on Monday said that the government has been trying to develop infrastructure and connectivity, besides enabling the environment in Assam to attract more foreign investment, particularly the Japanese investors.
Accompanied by the Japan Ambassador to India, Satoshi Suzuki, Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is very serious to develop the northeastern region and Assam with more investments.
Japanese companies are familier to Assam. India-Japan partnership can really make a difference. Assam is the springboard of India s Act East Policy, he told the media.
Referring to the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) aided projects, the Minister said that several projects worth Rs 9,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore are almost committed or implemented or under discussions. ....

India and Japan are jointly developing eastern waterways transport connecting India, Bangladesh and Myanmar for trade.
This was said by Indian External Affair Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday. He was speaking on India s act east policy and cooperation with Japan in northeast India and beyond land borders.
Our initiatives are today once again making the Brahmaputra River the primary channel for movement of goods and people. Assam will connect the Himalayas with the Bay of Bengal through inland water connectivity to the main ports there especially Chittagong (Chattogram) and Mongla, he said. ....
