A recent development involving the provision of drinking water via taps in the temple town of Puri in Odisha has turned into a conversation starter on Indiaâs standards of water sufficiency.

Chennai: It was earlier this week that the Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha government declared Puri as the first city in India to boast of city-wide safe drinking tap water. The state administration is now planning to roll out this facility in 16 more towns which include Cuttack, Rourkela, and Berhampur, and is expected to benefit 40 lakh people. All urban areas of the state are set to be provided with the âdrink from tapâ water facility by March 2022, making it the first state in India to do so. ....

India is currently facing massive water challenges, which in recent years have become one of the most urgent policy issues. The problem ranges across depleting underground water levels, unsafe drinking water, water loss due to inadequate sewerage systems, and untreated wastewater polluting India’s major rivers.
According to ‘The Composite Water Management Index 2018’, published by Niti Aayog, if the required measures are not implemented, the country’s water demand is further projected to be double of the available water supply by 2030. If this unprecedented situation did come to pass, which policy makers are determined will not be allowed to happen, it could mean severe water scarcity for hundreds of milli ....
