Chennai: It was earlier this week that the Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha government declared Puri as the first city in India to boast of city-wide safe drinking tap water. The state administration is now planning to roll out this facility in 16 more towns which include Cuttack, Rourkela, and Berhampur, and is expected to benefit 40 lakh people. All urban areas of the state are set to be provided with the âdrink from tapâ water facility by March 2022, making it the first state in India to do so. ....

Twenty-first Century India is urbanizing at a massive scale. The country is expected to house half of its population in urban areas by the year 2040. Cities, especially the larger ones, have been placed at the centre of the economic growth strategies. However, the increasing pace of urbanisation in India has not been matched by adequate planning, governance and infrastructure development. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have further exposed the shortcomings of Indian cities in addressing urban densification and inadequate provision of urban basic services including drinking water and sanitation.

New Delhi, Feb 17 : The Centre s Jal Jeevan Mission-Urban (JJM-U) is designed to provide universal coverage of water supply to all households in all cities in the country, an official said on Wednesday.
JJM-U will lead to competition among cities to become more water secure and will create more awareness and sensitivity towards water conservation, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra said.
While launching the pilot programme of the Pey Jal Survekshan, he said that based on the learnings from it, the programme will be extended to all the AMRUT cities. ....
