Clarence Fielder, a New Mexico State University professor who taught African American history from 1970 to 2010, is adding to his legacy. NMSU Regents approved naming a wing of Breland Hall to honor Fielder, who died in 2015. The Clarence H. Fielder Wing is home to NMSU’s Department of History, which served as Fielder’s academic home throughout his career.

“Webster has no words to describe Clarence Fielder,” said Marcia Boyer, Fielder’s niece who spoke on behalf of her mother Gertrude and the Fielder family. “Clarence loved a few things in life: his family, his church, history and education. His joy for teaching and sharing history was spread from grade school levels to college levels and from generation to generation. This earned him respect from his community. This wing in Breland Hall acknowledges his dedication and interest in NMSU.” ....

Nación Genízara explores the origin, cultural evolution, and survival of the Genízaro people. It was the winner of the 2021 Heritage Publication Award from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and the second-place winner of the 2020 International Latino Book Award for Best History Book.

They were captured during wars with Utes, Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos and Pawnees and were brought to colonial society as captives. By 1800, Genízaros made up a third of the population. Many in the land-grant societies assimilated into Hispano and Pueblo society, while others retained their identity through custom, self-government, and kinship ....

SPRUCING UP ROADSIDE MARKERS: Alan Clarke asks in an email for contact information to report “defaced or otherwise damaged N.M. roadside historic information markers. I’m not sure of their official name, but I’m talking of the big historic markers, usually with the big logs at each side. Some are quite shabby and are not repaired for months or sometimes a year or so. These are deserving of proper attention.”
The contact person is New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Operations Engineer Andrew Gallegos.
Gallegos says, “As part of the State Maintenance Bureau, I have volunteered our services to install new markers along NMDOT roadways which have been approved by the Cultural Properties Review Committee (CPRC) as well as attempting to maintain all the existing markers along NMDOT roadways. It is a difficult task in that there are several hundred markers and they ....
