Winchester Gate in Salisbury to host comedy nights

The Tent is a purpose-built multi-arts performance space built in the garden of the Rampart Road venue.
After being awarded a Cultural Recovery Grant from the Arts Council, the team at the Winchester Gate set about creating a fun circus-style amphitheatre to bring a wide selection of arts to the local community.
Every first Tuesday of the month The Winchester Gate will host a jam packed evening of laughs with both established and up and coming comedy acts.
The first line-up on Tuesday August 3 includes headline act Laura Lexx, pictured below, who has appeared on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, Comedy Central’s Roast Battle, Hypothetical and many more. ....

Mud, sequins, and a flock of white doves: the return of Giffords circus

“Mud and sequins,” says Nancy Trotter Landry, sitting amid the sawdust in the Giffords big top at Fennells Farm in the Cotswolds, where only 20 minutes ago she was performing an intricate dance with eight hoops in front of a rapturous (socially distanced) audience. “That’s what sums up the circus for me. And probably what I’ve missed the most. Well, the sequins at any rate.”
There is certainly a lot of mud today at Fennells, the permanent home of Giffords ever since a wide-eyed, 24-year-old Nell Gifford established it in 2000 with the dream of creating “a miniature village green circus, bursting at the seams”. It’s now open again to the public for the first time in 12 months. There are also plenty of sequins, glinting away on Nancy’s fairy costume, and on those of the ushers, trussed up in nude fishnet tights, wine red leotards and, er, Wellington boots, as they ushe ....

Ray Anderson, director, Spa Pavilion said: “This latest grant will be vital as we once again prepare to re-open and put on our wide variety of shows in Felixstowe.
It guarantees that we can look forward with confidence to what will undoubtedly be a challenging period, and we thank both the Arts Council and all of our loyal customers and ticketholders from the bottom of our hearts for their support through these most demanding and unusual of times.”
Funding from the Cultural Recovery Grant will support Spa Pavilion with an investment in a new range of shows for 2021, from writing to rehearsals, musical arrangements, scenery building and wardrobe creation. The theatre also plans to reschedule community events where the venue is provided at a reduced or free hire cost. ....
