Healthcare Science Education In Calaveras Receives Grant Funding

Calaveras, CA–A new grant for $35,000 was received from California Health Care Foundation(CHCF) and will be used to bolster and expand the Career Technical Education(CTE) program that benefits Calaveras students seeking a career in healthcare. In addition to that funding, Mark Twain Health Care District approved a $25,000 grant.
The CHCF is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving California’s health care system.
Chief Executive Officer of the Mark Twain Health Care District Dr. Randall Smart is optimistic about partnering with the school system, he explained. “The Mark Twain Health Care District is strongly committed to supporting our youth. We want every student to have the educational opportunity to explore the exciting and rewarding world of healthcare service. Calaveras County has a strong history of offering educational options to students and families. With the onset of COVID-19, schools had to adjust quickly to new models for learning. The goal of educational leaders in Calaveras is to ensure various educational opportunities that fit students and their families’ individual needs.
Two new bills currently in the California Legislature threaten educational options for families. Assembly Bill 1316 and SB593 propose to change how Calaveras County families can access education. AB1316 is an 80-plus-page bill addressing audit and accounting standards, funding, independent study, contracts, attendance, teacher assignments, school calendars and oversight. SB593 is a lighter bill addressing some of the same issues. Their intent is to eliminate legislative loopholes that some questionable charter schools have exploited for financial gain. ....

Mandatory evacuations issued in Calaveras County as crews battle fire

Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings as crews continue to battle a fire in Calaveras County.The Campo Fire in Campo Seco has burned 150 acres as of 5:30 p.m., according to the Calaveras County Office of Emergency Sevices.The mandatory evacuations were issued for the area of Loera Road, parts of Watertown Road and parts of Paloma Road.Officials said a temporary shelter site has been established at Calaveras High School, located at 350 High School Street in San Andreas. That site will be open until 8 p.m.Residents are asked to avoid the area and evacuate immediately if advised to by law enforcement.This is a developing story.Stay with KCRA 3 for the latest. ....

7:45 p.m. Thursday update: CalFire’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit said Thursday evening that fire crews “are making good progress and the fire … is 150 acres and 0 % contained. Resources will continue to work towards full containment throughout the night.”
6:20 p.m. Thursday update: The mandatory evacuation order has been downgraded to an evacuation warning, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said. The shelter at Calaveras High remains open to evacuees through 8 p.m.
