The move comes the same week Cal Fire suspended all outdoor burn permits.
The council voted unanimously Wednesday to seek the fire safety grants. If approved, they would pump critical funds into reserves, securing the city’s ability to abate fire hazards.
A grant for up to $200,000 from the California Fire Safe Council and a $15,000 grant from California Fire Foundation are in the works.
“These grants are a great opportunity,” Mayor Erin Minett told the council. “The grant applications are due June 15, so the sooner we get this done, the better.”

At the beginning of the 2020 fire season, we asked residents in five northeastern California counties about efforts they were taking to prepare for wildfires and what barriers they perceived in reaching their goals.
Nearly all indicated that wildfire had impacted their community within the past decade.
Almost half of the residents indicated their home insurance had been affected in some way (e.g. insurance rate increase, dropped policy) by wildfire risk.
Most residents were creating and maintaining defensible space on their property by doing the work themselves or paying for it out of their own pocket – very little was grant funded. ....

Looking back to the devastating 2017 and 2018 wildfire seasons, it’s hard to believe that catastrophic fires like Thomas and Woolsey would ever be matched. The Thomas Fire was one of the largest wildfires in our state’s history until the 2020 season brought five chart-topping wildfires and scorched over four million acres.
