Police have arrested Jordan Bevan, a 28-year-old man accused of using racial slurs and attacking an Asian worker at an Arlington restaurant.
Authorities in Virginia have arrested a suspect who allegedly used anti-Asian racial slurs against two restaurant employees before pushing one of them to the ground, all while skipping out on his bill.
Jordon Bevan, 28, has been taken into custody and charged with defrauding an innkeeper as well as felony assault and battery. The Arlington County Police Department announced his arrest on May 11. ....

8 in 10 Asian Americans say violence against them is increasing: poll

Approximately 8 in 10 Asian Americans say violence against them is increasing in the U.S., according to a new poll.
The survey, published on Thursday by the Pew Research Center, found that 81 percent of the Asian American adults surveyed said violence against Asian Americans in the U.S. is increasing.
Six percent of respondents said violence against Asian Americans is staying the same, while two percent said it is decreasing.

Nine percent of survey respondents said they were not sure.
The survey also found that 45 percent of Asian American adults said they had experienced at least one of five incidents: fearing that someone might threaten or physically attack them, people acting as if they were uncomfortable around them, being subjected to racial slurs or jokes, someone remarking that they should go back to their home country and someone making a remark that they are to blame for the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Yelp creates tool to help support Asian-owned businesses

Yelp on Tuesday unveiled a new tool to help customers identify and support Asian-owned businesses in the wake of increased violence against Asian Americans during the pandemic.
Miriam Warren, chief diversity officer for the business review website, wrote in a blog post that the new feature will allow businesses the option to identify themselves as “Asian-owned” under the “amenities” section of a business’s web page.
Yelp has previously released options for businesses to identify as Black, Latinx or women-owned.

The tool, developed in partnership with nonprofit Gold House, which promotes unity and representation for Asians and Pacific Islanders, comes in coordination with the release of Yelp’s latest Economic Impact Report on diverse businesses. ....
