Strawberry Cruzin’ drive-through event begins at Santa Maria Fairpark
SANTA MARIA, Calif. A modified version of the popular Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival begins its five-day run today at the Santa Maria Fairpark.
Titled Strawberry Cruzin 2021, the event will be held in a drive-through format, where cars will roll along a route that travels around the Fairpark property.
They are going to see the Fairpark decorated up with all the strawberry decorations and festivities stuff, said event spokesperson Rebecca Barks. We ve got our berries out with our sponsors on it. We have our traditional coloring contest. Then, the best thing about coming to fairs and festivals, is that we have that fair food, all that great stuff. We also have Critics Car Club out here also that will have on display some vintage cars to add to that fun cruzin theme. ....

Watsonville Gets First Large COVID Farmworker Vax Event 02-02-21 21:39 DC
The first large COVID-19 vaccination clinic specifically targeted to agricultural workers in Santa Cruz County will be held today (WED) at Casserly Hall in Watsonville.
The plan is to vaccinate approximately 1,000 local agricultural workers over two days, according to Dignity Health, one of the event sponsors.
Dignity said that one goal is “helping to create 1,000 new ambassadors within the farm worker community who can speak to the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine.”
The clinic is a partnership between Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, and the California Strawberry Commission. ....

Things are looking up for the strawberry industry in California, as growers are increasing acreage and production despite challenges such as the coronavirus.
Growers statewide are expected to have 36,487 planted acres in 2021, up from 34,167 projected for 2020, as this year’s fall plantings for spring and summer production rose 5.7%, according to a new survey by the California Strawberry Commission.
“For 2021, the variety mix continues to evolve, but with more modest changes in yield than were experienced from 2014-2018,” the commission’s report states. “Combined with warm, dry weather patterns common to La Nina conditions, there is a possibility for higher-than-projected volume in early spring ....
