In july ist 1960, five days after it cut its colonial ties, the former British Somaliland merged with the one-time Italian Somaliland to form a united Somalia. It was a bad move. The dictatorship of Siad Barre, who took office in 1969, marginalised and massacred Somalilanders. On May 18th 1991, five months after his fall, what was by then simply Somaliland declared independence. It was a statement of intent and regret. Ulster University (UU) has confirmed that its highly regarded CAIN archive at Magee will be retained as a live and curated resource thanks to a generous donation from Initiatives of Change.
The funding will directly support a significant modernisation of the site, including the introduction of cutting-edge archival content management systems not available when the Conflict Archive on the Internet (CAIN) site was first pioneering online archives, over two decades ago. ....

Future of Troubles archive secured with new funding


The future of a long-running Troubles archive has been secured.
Cain is an online collection of information and materials related to Northern Ireland’s troubled past and politics.
Now a donation by Initiatives of Change will enable it to be sustainable as a live, curated archive, the Ulster University has announced.
The future of Cain, an online archive of the Northern Ireland’s Troubles has been saved with new funding (Cain/PA)
It comes after a campaign by the university and Cain to secure the future of the website, which has been a free online resource since March 1997.
The funding will also support a significant modernisation of the site, including the introduction of cutting-edge archival content management. ....
