Monday July 12, 2021, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office received information through the Brookings Police Department 911 center that a woman that had fallen off a cliff near Natural Bridges about twelve miles north of Brookings.  Brookings’s dispatch advised they paged out Brookings and Cape Ferello Fire Departments along with Cal Ore Life Flight Ambulance. Curry County Sheriff’s dispatch then requested the Curry County Sheriff’s Office SAR rope team to respond along with the on-duty deputies. ....

Significant slide activity continues to hamper Last Chance Grade


U.S. Highway 101 was open to one-lane travel Tuesday night after another week of landslide activity blocked the road at Last Chance Grade.
Crews have been working on the road since last week, when precipitation caused the hillside above the highway to crumble down, blocking both lanes for extended periods of time.
As of Tuesday evening, crews warned motorists of possible 30-minute delays overnight, as well as three-hour delays scheduled between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to allow for removal and prevention work.
“We will continue constant monitoring of the slide and will provide updates here as we receive them,” Caltrans District 1 officials wrote in Facebook updates Tuesday. “Thank you very much to our crews, our slide catchment and those motorists maintaining patience and attentiveness for keeping the slide area safe.” ....

Caltrans Continues To Clear Rocks, Soil, Debris From U.S. 101 Near Last Chance Grade, Hopes To Bring In Special Equipment To Stabilize Slope

Though the road reopened at about 10 a.m. Monday, Caltrans crews continue to work to get debris off the hillside above Last Chance Grade.
The department closed the road at about 6 p.m. so they could bring in special equipment to stabilize the area and reopen the road. Yet despite the amount of debris falling onto the highway, including quarter-ton rocks, U.S. 101 itself is undamaged, said Caltrans project manager Sebastian Cohen. ....
