DxE dyes fountain 'blood' red to protest UC Berkeley meat suppliers


Animal rights activists representing the group Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE, dyed a fountain on Sproul Plaza red Monday and called on UC Berkeley to commit to stop purchasing from meat suppliers that allegedly raise animals on factory farms.
During the protest, campus freshman Zoe Rosenberg and alumna Cassie King, both organizers for DxE, stood inside the fountain, which had been dyed red to “resemble blood,” according to Rosenberg. The duo held placards saying “UC Berkeley Drop Factory Farms,” and the protest lasted from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and was livestreamed on DxE’s Facebook account.
“We’re asking that Cal Dining immediately drop these suppliers Hormel, Harris Ranch and Tyson Foods and to commit to phasing out all factory farms by the fall semester of 2021,” Rosenberg said. “We would eventually like to see them phase out animal products altogether because we believe that there’s really no humane way to raise and kill animals, and it’s just ....

According to a UC Berkeley student affairs email, students living in campus residence halls will no longer have to self-sequester starting Tuesday. However, students who have been asked by University Health Services to quarantine or isolate themselves will only be released after their quarantine period ends.

After a downward trend of UC Berkeley COVID-19 cases, campus will lift the general self-sequester for residential hall students effective Tuesday.
Students who have not been asked by University Health Services to quarantine or isolate themselves can now leave their rooms and floors while following social distancing guidelines and wearing masks. According to a UC Berkeley student affairs email, students living in campus residence halls are allowed to leave their rooms for outdoor recreation and exercise given that they are not in isolation or quarantine. Students in residence halls are still required to self-sequester until Monday.

Though UC Berkeley students living in the residence halls are required to self-sequester until Monday, they are now permitted to leave their rooms and floors for outdoor recreation and exercise as COVID-19 cases decline.
According to a student affairs email sent Friday, students with green badges in the eTang portal, or those who are not in isolation or quarantine, can leave their rooms to get fresh air, go on walks or exercise between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. ....
