Graves' FRYSC awarded $100,000 grant

A Graves County Schools program was awarded a substantial grant, a school official said at Thursdayâs board of education meeting.
Superintendent Matthew Madding congratulated the Family Resource and Youth Services Centers (FRYSC) for being awarded the Governorâs Emergency Education Relief (GEER) to FRYSC grant.
Madding said it was a âtwo year grant worth $100,000 that will be used for student mental health, social and emotional well being, and students in every one of our schools will benefit from that grant. So weâre very excited about that.â
Madding also addressed critical race theory, as he had received questions regarding the academic concept that racism isnât just individual or group bias but a bias embedded in social, political and judicial systems, and whether it would be taught in the Graves County School District. He stated that it does not appear in the Kentucky Academic Standards and that the districtâs site based decision ....

Community shows support for Lowes Elementary during board of education meeting

GRAVES COUNTY, KY â The Lowes community is calling for Graves County Schools to make major changes to the district s facility plan. Lowes Elementary was formerly a priority one project for the school district, but is labeled as a transitional facility in the newest draft of the plan. The Kentucky Department of Education will need to review the plan, and give comments back to the board.
Parents like Janie Burchard are pushing to keep the doors open.Â
Give our children the chance and our school to do just that. We re not asking for any more than any other school in Graves County has already received in the last 20 years, Burchard said. We re asking you and the board members to stand and fight for our children. ....

Shawn Maxie, age 52, of Paducah, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at his home.
Mr. Maxie was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Charles D. Maxie and the late Myrtle McKinney. Shawn attended West Point Military Academy and served in the United States Army before graduating from Murray State University with a Bachelorâs degree in Criminal Justice.
Shawn joined the Paducah Police Department in August of 1994, he was promoted to Captain on January 28, 2010, and retired in August of 2014. In this time, Shawn had a remarkable impact both inside the Police Department and in the city of Paducah. He was a member of the SWAT team, a Sergeant in the Drug Unit, and Sergeant and Captain in the Operations Division. Shawn was the founder and Commander of the Paducah Police Honor Guard and one of his great life achievements was performing honors in the outfield before a St. Louis Cardinals game.
