Using natural killers from the immune system to target breast cancer cells

Using natural killers from the immune system to target breast cancer cells
It sounds like a plot from a Quentin Tarantino movie something sets off natural killers and sends them on a killing spree.
But instead of characters in a movie, these natural killers are part of the human immune system and their targets are breast cancer tumor cells. The triggers are fusion proteins developed by Clemson University researchers that link the two together.
The idea is to use this bifunctional protein to bridge the natural killer cells and breast cancer tumor cells. If the two cells are brought close enough together through this receptor ligand connection, the natural killer cells can release what I call killing machinery to have the tumor cells killed. ....

Clemson researchers find snake venom complexity is driven by prey diet

Credit: Kyle Hutchison
Diversity in diet plays a role in the complexity of venom in pit vipers such as rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths.
But new collaborative research by Clemson University scientists found the number of prey species a snake ate did not drive venom complexity. Rather, it was how far apart the prey species were from each other evolutionarily.
It s not just diet that drives the variation in venom across snakes. It s the breadth of diet, said Christopher Parkinson, a professor in the College of Science s Department of Biological Sciences. If a snake eats 20 different species of mammals, its venom will not be very complex. But if it eats a centipede, a frog, a bird and a mammal, it s going to have a highly complex venom because each component of that venom is affecting something different in one of the different animals the snake is feeding upon. ....

CLEMSON, South Carolina - Clemson University scientists have linked climatic fluctuations over the past one and a quarter-century with flower color changes.
Researchers combined descriptions of flower color from museum flower specimens dating back to 1895 with longitudinal- and latitudinal-specific climate data to link changes in temperature and aridity with color change in the human-visible spectrum (white to purple).
The study, which was published in the journal ....

Study explores new parasitic worm that affects reproduction in Caribbean spiny lobster

Study explores new parasitic worm that affects reproduction in Caribbean spiny lobster
A Clemson University researcher is studying how a new parasitic worm he discovered and named after comedian and late-night talk show host Conan O Brien affects reproduction in the Caribbean spiny lobster.
J. Antonio Baeza, an associate professor with the College of Science s Department of Biological Sciences, discovered the new species of nemertean worm belonging to the genus Carcinonemertes while researching parental behaviors and reproductive performance of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus in the Florida Keys.
Caribbean spiny lobsters, which get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies, live in the Atlantic Ocean s tropical and subtropical waters as far north as North Carolina, as well as the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. ....
