If last summer taught us anything, the upcoming hiking season is going to be a crowded one. A host of national parks, other federally- and state-managed lands, and campgrounds both public and private are preparing for an influx of hikers by implementing reservation systems and limiting the number of visitors at any one time.
Overall, these systems are a good thing: They help preserve the wild places we love by mitigating overuse. But they do make it harder to find a place to pitch your tent, especially for car campers. Thankfully, the United States especially the western half of the country is blanketed by federal public lands that offer scenic, (relatively) easily accessible, and free campsites if you’re willing to do some research and exploring to get to them. ....

The skies were gloomy, but my mood couldn’t have been sunnier. I was tromping up the Horn Fork Trail in Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks Wilderness in a light drizzle with two friends. It was the last weekend in August, and the willows that lined the path were just beginning to take on the yellow of autumn. Low clouds obscured the summit of 14,421-foot Mount Harvard. The weather report had forecast rain all morning, but it was supposed to clear up before the weekend was over.
Abby, Erica, and I had met as college interns at the same outdoor startup. We’d all landed in Colorado following graduation and had been looking forward to this girls’ overnight for months. As we walked, Abby regaled us with the plot of a horror movie. Then, to lighten the mood, we sang show tunes, grateful that the trail was empty and just flat enough to grant us the lung capacity to really belt it out. ....

Lakeview Campground, with wonderful views of the Twin Lakes Reservoir, is located about 20 miles south of Leadville, Colorado. The campground attracts many hikers looking to explore nature and the hiking trails in the surrounding area. Boaters can launch their craft at the nearby boat dock and fishing enthusiasts can find numerous locations at Twin Lakes Reservoir for fishing.
This campground has single family sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection are provided. Firewood may be purchased at the Host site.
Notifications and Alerts
Please note that this campground will be without water for the entire 2021 season. Please plan on bringing water with you for your needs. We hope to have it back up for the 2022 season, major repairs are being made. Thank you for your understanding. ....
