Plans Approved for Student Housing Complex on Former Hilltop Mobile Home Site


After months of discussions, reviews and adjustments, College Township Council on Thursday unanimously approved, with conditions, plans for a two-building student housing complex on the site of the former Hilltop Mobile Home Park.
Pending completion of the conditions, Texas-based student housing developer Aspen Heights Partners plans to begin construction this summer on the property along the west side of Squirrel Drive and south of East College Avenue.
“I hope everybody who’s been following along really appreciated the diligence that I felt we and staff and the developer and everybody involved brought to this,” Councilman Paul Takac said. “As a resident immediately adjacent to this, am I delighted that there’s a student housing development? Not especially, but I will say that if it has to be that I feel like we kind of lucked out with Aspen Heights in a sense that they and their team really stepped up.” ....

Site Plan Approved for Aldi Store in College Township


Discount grocery store Aldi is moving forward with its
second planned State College-area location following unanimous conditional approval of its final site development plan by College Township Council on Thursday night.
The 19,221-square-foot store will be constructed on the former Krentzman Supply property at the corner of Benner Pike and Shiloh Road, next to the Nittany Mall and across from Sheetz.

After 8-Month Effort, College Township Council Approves Ordinance to Permit Backyard Chickens


Maeve Elliott began raising her four pet hens Purple, Banana, Waffles and El at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, when her parents, Nathan and Jackie, acquired them to help give their daughter some companionship and structure during a time lockdowns and distancing.
Maeve’s “side-eye queens” have given the family “a wonderful learning experience, lots of laughs and the best fresh eggs that we’ve ever had,” Jackie Elliott said during a public hearing prior to council’s vote on Thursday.
They were under the impression the hens were permitted in the township, until a zoning officer informed them chickens were a violation of an old ordinance that prohibits residents from keeping farm animals on less than 10 acres in a residential zoning district. Pet chickens were considered farm animals in the vaguely worded ordinance, and if they did not get rid of them, they would face fines of up to $500 per day. ....
