A report was not released on April 22 due to school vacation week. Collectively, in the past two weeks, numbers have varied. New Bedford reported the highest number of student cases since the week of Dec. 3 through Dec. 9, as the district reported 45 student cases. Acushnet reached its peak of three COVID-positive student cases, the second time they have reported as the highest number of cases. Dartmouth dropped down from the previously reported six student cases. Fairhaven reached its baseline of zero reported new cases. ....

School COVID cases on the rise, district totals hits new record high


Acushnet: 2 students, 1 staff
Dartmouth: 6 students, 0 staff
Fairhaven: 3 students, 0 staff
New Bedford: 14 students, 5 staff
District total: 1081 students, 175 staff
Cases continue to steadily rise across Greater New Bedford while student district totals across the state have reached an all-time high.
By April 5, Commissioner of Education Jeffrey Riley expected all elementary students to return to an in-person learning model, as he has previously stated that there is very little transmission within this age group. In addition, middle schools were given a deadline of April 28 to return to the building.
Acushnet has slowly transitioned out of a four-day week into full in-person instruction Monday through Friday. Dartmouth added grades 2 and 4 to the expansion plan on April 12. Fairhaven has adjusted school start and dismissal times at the elementary, middle and high school levels. New Bedford welcomed back Grades 10 through 12 on April 7, completing it ....

In-person test an unfair burden on English learners

While we applaud the decision of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to allow students in grades 3 through 8 to take the MCAS tests remotely this spring, the policy does not address the inequity of in-person testing required for English learners. In addition to MCAS, English learners take an annual English proficiency test, ACCESS for ELLs, which is only administered in person. As a result, while their peers have the option to complete all testing remotely, English learners, many of whom live in communities that are disproportionately affected by COVID-19, still need to go into school buildings for in-person ACCESS testing. This is an inequitable policy that favors some students over others. ....
