Feds say Michigan students must take M-STEP test this spring despite COVID

The U.S. Department of Education has denied Michigan s request to waive the federal requirement of year-end statewide assessments, known as state summative tests, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. 
That means Michigan students are going to have to take the M-STEP and several other tests this spring. 
According to the Michigan Department of Education, the tests include M-STEP for students in grades 3-8; PSAT 8/9 for students in 8th grade; MME, including SAT, for students in 11th grade; MI-ACCESS for students receiving special education services in grades 3-8 and 11; and WIDA for students in English learner programs in grades K-12. ....

LANSING In a fitting end to a school year like none other, Michigan students are preparing for the annual M-STEP but it’s unclear whether they ll actually have to take it. 
The window for schools to administer the state’s standardized test for third through eighth graders runs April 12 to May 21. But lawmakers and educators want the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, known as the M-STEP, called off for a second straight year.
State and local officials last year opposed administering the test, arguing against the idea of testing while COVID-19 upended Michigan s public schools. They continue to oppose it, but some argue the assessments will help schools determine where students need to catch up and canceling the test would hinder their ability to give students that specific assistance.  ....
