Critchfield mum on rumored superintendent's run | News

State Board of Education President Debbie Critchfield wouldn’t confirm or deny an unsourced rumor Wednesday that she’ll run for state superintendent of schools. Branden Durst, who filed paperwork for a state superintendent’s run in January, welcomed Critchfield to the race in a tweet Wednesday morning.
Durst didn’t provide a source for Critchfield’s purported run, but called her out for being a “moderate in the mold of Gov. Little,” who’s “been behind school closures and supporting common core.”
“As the only conservative candidate, I look forward to the contrast with her,” wrote Durst, who served in the Legislature as a Democrat but is running for state superintendent as a Republican. ....

The Idaho Education Association, the teachers union, is pushing for lawmakers to use a large chunk of the state s projected $600 million budget surplus to make a substantial investment in public schools rather than implementing tax cuts.
In terms of investing in education, the governor has also proposed $30 million for literacy, career technical education and other programs, and $250 million to fully fund the Career Ladder program to raise teacher salaries.  ....

Amidst budget cuts and staff furloughs, the University of Idaho and the state’s sister institutions delivered on a top priority this fall. The university stayed open for in-state instruction.
“We did the hard work, and we succeeded,” President C. Scott Green told legislative budget-writers Monday morning.
Green kicked off “Education Week” at the Statehouse Monday, including a series of budget presentations before the Legislature’s Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee. Not surprisingly, the coronavirus pandemic was a central talking point. And Monday’s hearing even had a pandemic feel: Green addressed lawmakers remotely, from a state Division of Financial Management conference room across the street from the Statehouse, while Idaho’s other college and universities spoke remotely from their respective campuses. ....
