The woman wanted to help those in her neighborhood who’d lost a job during the pandemic and raised $7,000 after texting her friends about getting involved by buying supplies for those in need. Scott, the former spouse of Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, heard about the effort and was inspired to act, she wrote in a post for
Medium. Over four months, she gave $4.2 billion to 384 high-performing charities nationwide, including more than $60 million that came to San Antonio. “MacKenzie’s gift will keep us from going into debt and from having to get loans for our projects,” says Michael Guerra, chief resource officer for the San Antonio Food Bank. The gift that author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott bestowed on Palo Alto College amounts to $20 million, officials confirmed Thursday, the largest donation in the 75-year history of what is now the Alamo Colleges District.
It ranks among the largest ever received by any institution of higher learning in San Antonio. It brings the district’s total private fundraising this year to about $30 million. And it supercharges an 18-month effort to secure and extend the financial footing of its free tuition program, the Alamo Promise, among many other impacts. ....

SAN ANTONIO – MacKenzie Scott, a novelist and philanthropist, has broken records while making donations to several San Antonio organizations that address income inequity and poverty
Scott first announced news of a $4.2 billion donation to 384 organizations across the United States on social media.
“I asked a team of advisors to help me accelerate my 2020 giving through immediate support to people suffering the economic effects of the (COVID-19) crisis,” Scott said in her announcement. “They took a data-driven approach to identifying organizations with strong leadership teams and results, with special attention to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital.” ....
