All national flags in Belize will be flying at half mast as a sign of respect on Saturday, the day that Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, will be buried in England. The Governor General Sir Colville Young asked the Prime Minister to order the lowering of the flags and for church bells to toll on April seventeenth, 2021, at eight a.m. as a sign of respect and mourning. We asked Minister Balderamos-Garcia for her thoughts on the significance of his passing for Belize.

“Since the latter part of last year, as you are all aware, we had seen an increased level of activity in terms of illicit aircrafts trafficking through Belize’s airspace. We have also seen where we [have] in the past recovered a plane and we’ve found at various scenes wreckages that have been burnt.”

It is reminiscent of Friday’s discovery where the charred remains of an aircraft was found along with its contents intact not far away. Former Governor-General Doctor Dame Minita Gordon was laid to rest on Wednesday at the Lord Ridge Ceremony. While her sendoff was stately, she was not always treated with the respect and dignity deserving of her position. In fact, in her retirement, she was often seen around Belize City, where others who did not know her would make fun of the elderly woman. It is part of the neglect that was experienced when she retired to private life. There was no pension set aside for her then, and there still is none set aside for Governor-General Sir Colville Young now. As described by Prime Minister John Briceño, it is a blight – one his administration is prepared to correct. Doctor Gordon’s longtime friend Stanley Lizama shared an unfortunate incident with the media. ....

The first meeting of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Prime Minister John Briceño was an outdoor affair in Belmopan this morning. A host of dignitaries and other invited guests were socially distant under a large tent where they sat and witnessed the administering of the oath of office, as well as remarks delivered by the Governor General and the new Head of Government.
