Supervisors appoint Anderson police chief as Shasta County sheriff

Amid pleas from some of the public to not rush to judgment and “pause” the selection, Shasta County supervisors appointed Anderson Police Chief Michael Johnson as sheriff Tuesday.
Johnson’s appointment came after a 4-1 vote. Supervisor Patrick Jones cast the lone dissenting vote.
Johnson takes over from Sheriff Eric Magrini, who resigned in June to become the county’s assistant CEO. Johnson will start Aug. 15.
Johnson s term will run through December 2022. He has already said he will seek re-election in June 2022.
Addressing supervisors and the public after his appointment, Johnson said he’s had people ask him why he wants to leave Anderson to lead a department that’s been beset with controversy in recent months with the sudden resignation of Magrini. ....

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – The 2020 Zogg Fire destroyed more than 200 structures and burned 56,000 acres across Shasta and Tehama counties.
On Wednesday, a settlement was reached between those counties and PG&E. A collective settlement of $12.36 million was made between the two counties and PG&E. John Fiske, who represents both counties in the lawsuit said a majority of that money would go towards Shasta County. ....

Shasta supervisors Chimenti, Moty, Rickert respond to calls for recall

Tuesday was the deadline for the three Shasta County supervisors being targeted for recall to respond to proponents who want to oust them.
It also was the day District 1 Supervisor Joe Chimenti, District 2 Supervisor Leonard Moty and District 3 Supervisor Mary Rickert were served notice of the proposed recall in the Record Searchlight newspaper.
Recall supporters now have 10 days to submit a petition to the Shasta County Elections Office for approval. They can start collecting signatures after the petition is approved.
What recall supporters say
Supporters in the public notice said Chimenti, Moty and Rickert have betrayed public trust because they “bowed to Governor Newsom, a lawless politician, for county funding.” They “capitulated” to the state because they refused to terminate the local emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Supporters also claim the three failed to fulfill their oath of office. ....
