Commissioners Set Preliminary Cap for 6th Penny Tax At $90M

SWEETWATER COUNTY The Sweetwater County Commission set the preliminary cap on the Special Purpose Tax, also known as the 6th penny tax, during its meeting Tuesday.
After discussion over amounts to set the cap and corresponding duration it would take to collect those revenues, the Commission settled on $90 million. According to current calculations and projections, this 6th penny amount would take about seven years to collect.
This is a preliminary cap, which means it is a starting point for county entities to prepare plans for projects. This 6th penny tax initiative is meant to appear on the ballot for constituents to vote in November 2022. If passed, the tax was be effective at that date and the County would start receiving collections in April 2023. ....

Decreased Mineral Valuations Present Budget Concerns for Sweetwater County

SWEETWATER COUNTY The Sweetwater County Commissioners had an early budget discussion for Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) Tuesday afternoon, of which they are expecting to have to make some major budget cuts due to a decrease in revenue.
Sweetwater County Assessor Dave Divis said due to mineral valuation being significantly lower than previous years and with tax revenue decreasing this year, there is an estimated $5 million deficit in the county’s budget.
“There’s a $5 million drop right off the bat from the last tax year that we built to the current tax year that we’re going to build,” Divis said. “We’re $5 million in the hole before we even get started.” ....

Castle Rock Hospital District Seeks Clarity on Ambulance Service Contract Termination

SWEETWATER COUNTY The Castle Rock Hospital District (CRHD) Board of Trustees had a discussion with the Sweetwater County Commissioners today in search of clarity on the termination of the ambulance contracts, effective March 31, 2020.
At the time of the announcement, the Commissioners made it clear they did not wish to see ambulance services diminish in Sweetwater County.

CRHD Chairman Daniel Stanton asked the Commissioners why the contracts are being terminated in the middle of the contract, rather than at the end of the contract.
“We were taken aback,” Stanton said.
Chairman Randy “Doc” Wendling said the simple answer is a bleak financial situation in the upcoming fiscal year. According to Wendling, the Commissioners got a revenue picture in March 2020 that predicted very tough economic times for the county. ....
