Rio Arriba County manager's contract not renewed

Rio Arriba County commissioners voted Monday not to renew the contract of County Manager Tomas Campos who had served in the position for 25 years.
In a special meeting Monday, the commission voted 2-1 to replace Campos as county manager before immediately offering the position to Lucia Sanchez, a water planning program manager for the Office of the State Engineer.
There will be no job posting or application process for the county manager position, Commissioner James Martinez said.

Commissioner Christine Bustos, the lone dissenting vote in Monday’s decision, said Martinez and Commissioner Moises Morales had gone into Monday’s meeting with the intent of removing Campos from his position. ....

When Will the County Do Something about the Jail?


    This letter is long overdue. In December I received a card from Rio Arriba County Commissioner James Martinez. On the card he claims the County has made progress in completing multiple projects, such as County facilities, park upgrades and he projects more projects are in the planning stages. He says he looks forward to continuing the work for the residents of the County.
    Nowhere does he address the horrific incidents that plague the Rio Arriba County Adult Detention Center. This facility represents the Holocaust, where individuals were murdered. They were incarcerated, most did not return, they died at the hands of Adolph Hitler. ....

San Pedro Woman Appointed New Commissioner


  San Pedro resident Christine Bustos was appointed Feb. 12 by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to be the new District 2 Rio Arriba County commissioner.
    Bustos was appointed to replace Leo Jaramillo who was elected to the state senate last November and was appointed to the senate early after former senator Richard Martinez ended his term early citing COVID-19 related concerns.
    In a Feb. 12 phone interview Bustos said she was honored to receive the position.
    “I’m very honored to be appointed and hope to do my best for the people of Rio Arriba County and especially my district.”
    Bustos said she didn’t have a list of objectives yet but was planning on meeting with County leaders as well as with former commissioner Jaramillo to talk about what initiatives he started, so she can identify her priorities. ....
