It’s been nearly a week, but Rio Arriba County is still processing the sudden decision to replace its longtime county manager, Tomas Campos.
County commissioners voted 2-1 on May 3 to not extend Campos’ contract, which is set to expire on June 30, and immediately offered the position to Lucia Sanchez, forgoing any application or interview process. Commissioners James Martinez and Moises Morales cast the deciding votes.

The decision followed a five-hour executive session. Multiple county employees told the Journal that the board’s decision caught them off guard and was an emotional shock for many. ....

Â Â Â I had made a follow up meeting with Rio Arriba County Manager Tomas Campos and Economic Development Director Chris Madrid at 11:30 a.m., May 3 to talk about three issues that we had worked on together for the past three years to plan the next two years of activity.

Rio Arriba County manager's contract not renewed

Rio Arriba County commissioners voted Monday not to renew the contract of County Manager Tomas Campos who had served in the position for 25 years.
In a special meeting Monday, the commission voted 2-1 to replace Campos as county manager before immediately offering the position to Lucia Sanchez, a water planning program manager for the Office of the State Engineer.
There will be no job posting or application process for the county manager position, Commissioner James Martinez said.

Commissioner Christine Bustos, the lone dissenting vote in Monday’s decision, said Martinez and Commissioner Moises Morales had gone into Monday’s meeting with the intent of removing Campos from his position. ....

Two injured in Monday morning crash on West Maple

(Omaha, NE) Two people are injured in a crash near 111th and Maple.
Omaha Police say just before 10:00 Monday morning, officers were called to the area for a reported crash with injuries. OPD says an eastbound Nissan Altima failed to yield as it attempted to turn northbound onto Emmett from West Maple. Investigators say the Nissan was then hit by a westbound Jeep Cherokee. Police say people in both vehicles were transported to Bergan Mercy.
OPD says the driver of the Nissan, 41 year old Narissa Scales, was not wearing a seat belt and is being treated for a life-threatening, critical head injury. The driver of the Jeep, Moises Morales, was transported with a serious head injury. ....
