CARROLLTON Despite a spate of overdoses and deaths stemming from the use of the pharmaceutical drug fentanyl during the past week, Greene County officials believe it’s more of a fluke than an indication of a growing problem.
Three people overdosed on fentanyl on Feb. 4 in the county, and two of those people a Roodhouse man and a Wrights woman died as a result. A fourth person overdosed on Saturday.
“It’s kind of rare,” Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said, adding that they more typically might see one fentanyl overdose in a month. “These were just clustered together. It’s not common for this county.”

Having prescription medications in your home and then combining them with over-the-counter drugs can have toxic results that could elevate poor health conditions and even death and the return of cold and flu season heightens that risk, health officials say.
“Many people don’t realize the medications in their medicine cabinet could be incredibly dangerous if taken the wrong way,” Illinois Poison Center Assistant Vice President Carol DesLauriers cautions.
