Syracuse, N.Y. The parent company that owns the Skyline Apartments raked in at least $3.5 million in taxpayer money last year, even while tenants, code inspectors and housing officials have complained about the unsafe and unclean condition of their buildings.
Across 10 buildings in Syracuse and one in DeWitt, Green National owned by Tim and Troy Green collected millions of dollars in federal subsidies paid to low-income tenants and people who were formerly homeless or are recovering from drug or mental health problems. ....

Common Councilor Joe Driscoll has been fighting to eradicate lead poisoning in Syracuse since his election in 2017. With some of the highest rates of poisoning in America, it was an obvious cause for Driscoll, who saw lead poisoning as a major barrier, particularly for low income communities of color.

Manlius Town Councilor Katelyn Kriesel has been pushing the issue for years through the group Divest New York. She says the move pushes companies that want the financial boost of pension investment to change practices that contribute to the climate crisis.
“These companies will be compelled to transition to a renewable energy economy. And if they were to do so they would be allowed into the pension. So, we are confident this will help transition these companies to a sustainable, renewable energy economy.” ....
