Travellers in Reading could soon get a temporary home, with a councillor revealing plans for a ‘transit site’.
Transit sites are short-term stopping place for the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community and differ from permanent sites which residential pitches longer term occupation.
Plans for a traveller site at Richfield Avenue fell through in 2018 when the site was chosen for new secondary school River Academy, which is set to open later this year.
Reading Borough Council (RBC) is now looking for a new site and will reveal its plans “fairly soon”, according to Councillor Tony Page, the authority’s current lead member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport. ....

Two more Reading School Street road closures granted


Reading could get two new School Streets
Reading will get two new School Streets, with plans approved for road closures at peak times outside schools in Caversham and by Oxford Road.
The very first School Street in Reading was approved in November 2020 on Downing Road and Lambourne Close, outside Park Lane Primary (Junior School) in Tilehurst, but its opening has been delayed by Covid-19.
A School Street allows closures of roads to the traffic outside schools for up to 45 minutes twice a day during term time.
The second and third School Streets will be at Wilson Primary School and Thameside Primary School, with the plans approved by Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) Strategic Environment, Planning, and Transport committee last night (Monday, March 15). ....

Reading Council to force affordable housing rent cap on developers


The cap will help to keep rent down for families who qualify for affordable housing
Changes have been approved to the council’s affordable housing policy to cap rent at 70 per cent of market value.
The update to Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document (AHSPD) means developers will be asked to set affordable housing rates at a minimum of 70 per cent of market value.
Developers of sites with ten or more homes in Reading must make 30 per cent of them available for affordable housing.
However, this can be reduced, or the contribution can be made off-site, if it is not deemed viable. ....

Request for Reading councillors to get extra allowances rejected by independent panel


For special responsibility allowances, which are on top of the basic allowance, it recommends:
Leader of council: £19,008.75
Deputy leader: £11,610.75
Special Responsibility Tier 1 – Lead councillors (e.g. lead member for Housing): £9,761,25
Tier 2 – Leader of the main opposition group (currently Conservatives) and chairs of Licensing Applications and Planning Applications committees: £6,234.09
Tier 3 – Chairs of committees and group leaders of other political groups: £3,123.57
Tier 4 – Vice-chairs of committees, the independent chair of the Standards committee and the Fostering Panel member: £1,103.54
Allowances have been increased by 2.75 per cent in line with Local Government Pay Settlement recommendations every year since this policy was approved in 2019.
