Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD Citing concerns about public safety and noise, the City Council on Monday approved a home rule bill that would allow police to immobilize or tow vehicles owned by people who haven’t paid fines for illegal fireworks. The bill, proposed by Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and lead sponsor Councilor Victor Davila, will also need approval from the state Legislature and Gov. Charlie Baker before it can take effect in Springfield. ....
2:53 City Councilors in Springfield, Massachusetts next week will attempt to fill a vacancy among their ranks. The council’s General Government Committee voted to recommend a process for appointing a new city councilor for Ward 1 – a seat left vacant in January when Adam Gomez resigned after becoming a State Senator. It falls to the 12 councilors to pick someone to serve the rest of Gomez’s unexpired term because there was no second-place finisher in the last election in 2019 to automatically take over the seat. It is the first time this circumstance has occurred since Springfield added ward representatives to the City Council 12 years ago. ....

Sarno and Davila announced Wednesday they want the state to let the city immobilize and tow cars belonging to people with unpaid fines for breaking the city’s fireworks ordinance, a local law that’s still less than a year old and came after summer of complaints from folks irked by unauthorized and illegal fireworks displays. ....
The City Council in Springfield, Massachusetts will be on the clock during meetings this year. A new rule approved by the City Council will prohibit meetings from going past 10 p.m. unless there is unanimous consent by the councilors to do so. Adopted Monday night by an 8-5 vote, the rule change was proposed by six-term City Councilor Mike Fenton. The purpose of the rule is to recognize that everybody has different circumstances and when we are working past that hour it creates uneven burdens on members of the council based on their lifestyle as well as members of the public who want to watch what we are doing, said Fenton. ....
