Wake the Giant Receives City Funding

A near unanimous vote at city council means that $30,000 will be provided to the Wake the Giant Concert, which will go towards the stage, lighting, speakers and barricades.
The one individual opposed to the donation was At-Large Councillor Rebecca Johnson, who raised concerns about the price tag. She also cited her issues with this being a donation, meaning Wake the Giant would not have to pay back any of the funds.
“This is just straight outright, give us the money and we need it to put this on,” says Johnson. “I have the report here from the culture, we give back to the community nearly $3-million a year. Now $30,000 dollars in a $3-million budget is a lot of dollars.” ....

Indoor Turf Facility Report Coming To Council

Thunder Bay, ON, Canada / Country 105 | Thunder Bay s Country
Apr 29, 2021 11:18 PM
Both sides on the multi-use indoor turf facility discussion came out in the lengthy discussion, but some compromise may be on the horizon.
City Manager Norm Gale held decorum in a nearly four hour meeting Thursday, that discussed how to further proceed with the ratified project, after council decided in late March not to award the tender to the Tom Jones Corporation.
Many councillors, including Current River’s Andrew Foulds, felt there should be give and take when it comes to getting shovels into the ground.
“I think we all have to perhaps check our egos at the door,” Foulds stressed to council. “Perhaps we should check our visions of what we were hoping for [for this facility] at the door and see what we can get done that balances the interests and needs of [the user groups in the community].” ....

Landfill Business Discounts To Be Considered

Staff picture of Mapleward Recycling facility
Could businesses receive a volume discount when dropping garbage off at Thunder Bay’s landfill site?
Northwood Councillor Shelby Ch’ng tells us the idea seems ok at first glance, so Monday night she’ll ask city staff to see if the math supports it as a city business or a service to property owners.
“It’s born on the back of the taxpayer, to give discounts.  And, we only have so much room in our landfill site,” says Ch’ng.
The city councillor says a business owner has asked insistently this be done. ....
