MIAMI Miami Congresswoman-elect María Elvira Salazar will be unable to attend a Sunday ceremony in Washington to swear in members of the new Congress after learning she has COVID-19 during an emergency trip to the hospital, her office announced Thursday morning.
Salazar, a Republican who last month defeated Democratic U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala in perhaps the most surprising congressional upset in the country, learned she had contracted the coronavirus overnight after she was admitted to Doctors Hospital with a heart arrhythmia, according to a press release issued Thursday. ....

“I am incredibly thankful to the tireless front-line medical workers in our community, who help so many people combatting the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said in the statement. “I look forward to hitting the ground running for my community, once it is medically permissible.”
Salazar, who defeated first term Democrat Donna Shalala this past November for the District 27 seat, will not be attending the Congressional swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Sunday in Washington D.C.
She becomes the latest politician from the area to announce a positive test result, including Congressman-elect Carlos Gimenez and new Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Both Gimenez and Levine Cava have since recovered. ....

Miami-Dade Mayor Levine Cava Ends COVID Quarantine After Negative Tests

Levine Cava tweeted November 30
th that her husband, Dr. Robert Cava, was exposed by one of his patients and also tested positive. Levine Cava said she was exposed over the Thanksgiving holiday and has not had any in-person contact with other county employees.
“There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but for now we must all do our part to stop the spread,” Levine Cava said.
She spoke to a contact tracer from the Health Department in Miami-Dade.
“She was very thorough, making sure I identify anyone who might have been exposed and she ll be following up with those people anonymously,” Levine Cava said to NBC 6’s Alyssa Hyman after her initial diagnosis. ....
