Hydroponic growing containers popping up in rural villages


Several years ago, a grant from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) helped establish farms in Kodiak’s rural villages of Port Lions, Ouzinkie, Old Harbor and Larsen Bay. 
The farms now bloom with fruits and vegetables every summer. They provide a critical source of fresh food for communities where things like apples and lettuce typically arrive on expensive shipments, if they come at all. 
But Kodiak’s growing season is short, meaning many people in the archipelago still struggle for fresh produce in the colder parts of the year. This isn’t only a problem in the villages, but in the city of Kodiak as well.  ....

Local chef turns dream into reality with food truck


Local foodies can add another food truck to their rotation of new dining destinations with the opening of Million Recipes, located in the parking lot of Kodiak Island Brewing Co. 
The owner and chef, Diane Million, formerly known for her Monday night dinners at the brewery, opened her food truck business on Monday after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. 
“Thank you everyone, really, from the bottom of my heart, I can’t wait to make this what I want it to be, which is where everything we provide out here — at least 80% — is from Kodiak,” she said.  ....
