Spruce Beetle Outbreak Continues To Ravage Southcentral Alaska

Southcentral Alaska continues to see impacts from an ongoing spruce beetle outbreak that has affected more than 1.1 million acres across the region, according to the Alaska Division of Natural Resources – Division of Forestry. While the outbreak has subsided in some areas, many areas continue to experience steady or increasing beetle activity.

Spruce beetles, which are native to Alaska’s forests, feed and reproduce in spruce trees. All native spruce species and most ornamental species of spruce are suitable hosts for spruce beetle. Jessie Moan, Entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service, “
Spruce beetles become active with warmer spring temperatures. Adult beetles typically start to emerge from their host trees once temperatures reach around 60 degrees.” ....

Climate Change Impacting Tree Health in New Mexico

SANTA FE, NM – Today, the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) Forestry Division released its 2020 Forest Health Conditions Report and newly developed Story Map revealing significant impacts to trees on state and private land due to exceptional drought and warming temperatures.
According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, 2020 was the second warmest and fourth driest on record in New Mexico. As a result, aerial surveys conducted last year by the Forestry Division and its partner, the USDA Forest Service, found a nine percent increase in insect and drought-stress damage since the year prior.
“Climate directly influences forest health on multiple levels,” said State Forester Laura McCarthy. “Lack of rain, warming temperatures, and an increase in carbon dioxide continually alter our forest ecosystems, increasing the risk of insect outbreaks and catastrophic wildfire.” ....

Crabapple trees are one of my favorite ornamental spring trees. A mainstay of the New England landscape, they offer three seasons of interest, plus a handsome branching habit that looks good all winter long, especially when decked with freshly fallen snow or a sparkling coat of ice. Crabapples are typically low maintenance and drought tolerant. Their lovely dark pink or red buds open to a wide variety of shades, from white to magenta. They can have single, double, or semi-double blossoms as well as cupped or fringed blossoms. Some are deliciously fragrant. The fruits vary too, from yellow to orange and red. Birds love them. Crabapples also offer colorful fall foliage. ....
