Firefighters and Avista crews prepare for fire season inside the city

SPOKANE, Wash. It’s been an unusually dry spring, and firefighters have already been hard at work fighting fires. Spokane is also surrounded by nature which means there’s greater risk wildfires can spread and start inside city limits.
“Anything that’s inside the wildland urban interface, so homes not necessarily in the wilderness but adjacent to flammable materials, are at risk,” said Brian Treffry, the Battalion Chief for the Spokane Valley Fire Department.
Homes on the South Hill or Dishman Hill are prime examples of wildland urban interfaces. They’re nestled inside lush forests and are at greater risk this season for wildfires which is why firefighters are encouraging people to create defensible spaces around your home, so there’s a barrier. Also, maintaining your lawn and keeping flammable materials at least 30 feet away will help mitigate the risk. ....

Fire Districts Help Create "Wildfire Ready Neighbors"

Washington s Department of Natural Resources is working with homeowners to reduce their exposure to wildfires.  
The Wildfire Ready Neighbors program is sending fire experts to rural areas to talk about specific ways property owners can make their homes safer.
I had a fire expert come to my place, northwest of Spokane. It s a classic eastern Washington landscape, open dry grass meadows with small stands of ponderosa pines. The fire danger has always been here but has become more worrisome in recent years.  
The Wildfire Ready Neighbors program sent former Fire District 5 Commissioner Bonnie Cobb.  Cobb walked around my property and made specific suggestions about how to make sure if a fire comes to my area, it doesn t spread to my home. First, she examined the immediate zone closest to my house.   ....

Washington Introduces Wildfire Prevention Program In Spokane County

Washington lands officials are emphasizing prevention at the beginning of what could be a busy wildfire season.
The Department of Natural Resources reports more than 250 wildfires so far this spring, most of them east of the Cascades. That’s well above normal for this time of the year.
A residential community north of Spokane is among those signing on to a new state initiative aimed at minimizing damage caused by wildfires.
Reflection Lake is a small, manmade lake near Elk in north Spokane County. It’s Charlie Bennett’s little piece of heaven.
“Oh, don’t get me started. Reflection Lake started in 1955 as an exclusive fishing club. Bing Crosby was an original member and they called it the Pelican Club, because they’d fly their float planes up from Spokane. The Hollywood people would land right up on the lake and catch right off their planes and fly away, he said. ....
