33rd Annual Art in Gadsden

This annual tradition of Gadsden Arts showcases recent art by the area’s top artists and artists new to the region. Exhibited works span the mediums of watercolor, egg tempera, acrylic, oil, photography, clay, encaustic, wood, metal, glass, and serigraph.
The founders of the Art in Gadsden exhibition, Beth Appleton and David Harbaugh, wanted to bring fine art to Gadsden County, foster the careers of local artists, and draw the community together through this special event. Beginning in 1989, Art in Gadsden was displayed in empty downtown storefronts in Quincy, all put together and organized by a dedicated and all volunteer community. This exhibition draws visitors and patrons from across the region each year, and is an exciting opportunity for regional artists to share their work and for Gadsden Arts to celebrate the creativity within our community. ....

At 95, dollmaker sews up 90 miniature outfits for Jefferson Museum show

Speaking with a soft, North Carolina lilt in a voice suggesting a genteel lady 50 years younger than her stated age, White nevertheless, has seen a lot of history. And like the warm mothers in Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver, she has floated above the unpleasant parts, focusing on family and the simple pleasures of life.
Along the way, she has also found a creative outlet that on her way to 100, still brings her the joy of making something new.
Born in Jacksonville, just before the crash that brought on the Great Depression, White learned about what happens when jobs disappear. Her family moved back to a grandfather’s North Carolina farm to weather the next years. “We had plenty to eat from the land,” she says, almost wistfully. Her father got a WPA job and her mother taught her to can food and master other “womanly” arts, like crocheting and sewing. ....

J. William Hill: The Magic of Entertainment, is an exhibition by the Atlanta based artist that is meant to evoke strong emotions from viewers. Hill’s work tends to deal in allegories and identity through depictions of amusements and distractions such as parades and circuses; his paintings leave much up to interpretation while presenting the entertainment theme. Hill began painting in the early 1990s as an escape from the horrors of an epidemic he found himself ensnared in. It became a means to hide from the world around him and drew him inward toward a select few friends. The result created a very introverted and often dark persona. He has won awards in local and Southeastern galleries, most recently taking 1st place in a Gadsden Arts tried exhibition for a painting of his mother that drew remarks as “cree ....
