Former mayor Don Farmer dies Monday

Local businessman and former two-term Van Wert mayor Don Farmer died Tuesday at a Fort Wayne, Indiana, hospice center. He was 82.

Farmer, a Pennsylvania native, later moved to California, where he graduated from Fresno High School and earned a business degree from Los Angeles State College.
He later moved to Van Wert, where he owned and operated Mac’s Delicatessen and The Paint Bucket, as well as PAVE Communications.
Farmer served two non-consecutive four-year terms as mayor, from 2004-2007 and from 2012-2015. He also served several terms on Van Wert City Council, representing the First and Second Wards and as an at-large councilman. ....

Council discusses DORA district, hears economic report

Van Wert City Council learned about a new program that could bring more foot traffic to the downtown area, while also hearing about some economic development positives during its meeting Monday evening.

First off, Main Street Van Wert Executive Director Mitch Price made a presentation on the DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) program planned for the downtown area.
The state program consists of a district within the downtown area where A and D alcohol permit holders can sell alcohol, by the cup, to patrons, who would be able to walk or dine within the boundaries set up by the program. DORA was first created in 2017 for communities with populations of fewer than 35,000 people and a maximum district size of 150 acres. ....

Marsh Foundation to undergo transition

The Marsh Foundation has been committed to serving children and families for 100 years. Throughout the past century, the State of Ohio has often determined that facilities need to meet certain requirements and provide certain services in line with their licensing. This is once again the case, and The Marsh will transition from a group home facility to a Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP).
According to Kim Mullins, executive director of Child & Family Services, this is simply a continuation of the quality treatment programs The Marsh offers children and families. 
“This transition will enhance the services we offer,” Mullins said.  ....

On to state…
The awards keep piling up for the Crestview Lady Knights Northwest Conference champions, Division IV sectional and district champions, and, now, regional champions after Saturday’s 65-35 win over Columbus Grove (see the Sports page for pictures and a full game story). The latest victory means Crestview will face No. 1 Fort Loramie in the Division IV state semifinals at 11 a.m. Thursday in Dayton.
