On Tuesday, a cloud could be seen rising from a hole in the ground, with gas blowing dust into the air for hours. Construction equipment surrounded the hole, though it was not clear what type of work was being done.
That is a significant amount of gas that is broken and blowing right now, Parra said in the morning. San Diego Gas & Electric emergency crews are on scene evaluating the situation, looking at dispersement patterns. ....

NATIONAL CITY (KUSI) – A construction crew accidentally cut through an underground utility line in a South Bay neighborhood today, prompting a gas leak that forced evacuations of a primary school, a strip mall and dozens of homes.
Workers excavating under a stretch of roadway in the 3400 block of East Eighth Street in National City as part of a cable-laying project ruptured the 6-inch-diameter pipeline about 10:30 a.m., according to fire department officials.
The resulting heavy stream of escaping flammable vapors forced evacuations of nearby Ira Harbison Elementary School along with a retail center and about 75 homes, NCFD Chief of Emergency Services Frank Parra said. ....

Gas leak prompts evacuations in National City

NATIONAL CITY
A natural gas leak prompted the evacuation of about 75 homes and a shopping center for nearly nine hours Tuesday in National City, officials said.
Authorities also evacuated a nearby elementary school that was about to let out for the day, rerouting parents to a different location to pick up their children, according to Frank Parra, chief of emergency services with the National City Fire Department.
The leak began about 10:30 a.m. and continued until San Diego Gas & Electric crews were able to shut off the line a little after 7 p.m., Parra said. No injuries from the leak were reported. ....
