State and federal transportation officials are touring the Connecticut site where two Metro-North trains packed with rush-hour commuters collided in an accident Friday that sent about 70 people to the hospital, severely damaged the tracks and threatened to snarl travel in the congested Northeast Corridor.
Three patients remained in critical condition Saturday morning, with two of those stable, according to officials at two Bridgeport hospitals.
About 700 people were on board the Metro-North trains when one heading east from Grand Central Station to New Haven derailed about 6:10 p.m. just outside Bridgeport, MTA and Bridgeport officials said.
The train was hit by a train heading west from New Haven to Grand Central on an adjacent track, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said. Some cars on the second train also derailed as a result of the collision. ....

A minor girl and three other people were wounded in separate incidents of firing in the city on Thursday.
Six-year-old Ana, daughter of Wahid, was brought to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) after she suffered a bullet injury in Qasba Colony of Orangi Town. Police said the girl was wounded by a stray bullet.
Separately, 27-year-old Arshad was injured when he resisted a mugging bid in Sher Shah. He was taken to the ASH. Meanwhile, a security guard of a private company, identified as 22-year-old Rashid, was shot and injured in a firing incident that took place near the Jamali flyover within the limits of the Sachal Police Station. He was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Police said the incident took place when the man put up resistance to a mugging bid. ....

A fire broke out in a shanty town in Shah Latif Town on Wednesday, rendering 40 poor families homeless. While no loss of life was reported in the incident, a minor girl suffered burn injuries.
According to a spokesperson for the fire brigade, the blaze devoured 40 makeshift houses in the Jogi Morr area. The injured girl was taken to a nearby private hospital. He said the firefighters brought the blaze under control after a two-hour operation.
He said the fire had caused damage worth thousands of rupees and also rendered at least 40 families homeless. Police said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, adding that further investigation is under way. ....

IRMO, S.C. (WIS) - A deputy is fighting for his life in the hospital after a crash in Richland County on Thursday morning, officials said.
It was a single-car crash near Koon Road in Irmo.
Crews rushed Sgt. Michael Mazerolle to the hospital, where he is in serious condition.
Officials have not said what caused the crash.
Sgt. Mazerolle has served with RCSD for 20 years.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
