A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a car in the Karangahake Gorge on Sunday afternoon.
State Highway 2 is closed through the Karangahake Gorge, between Paeroa and Waihi, after a pedestrian was struck by a car.
Police were notified of the collision at 12.28pm on Sunday. The pedestrian is reported to be seriously injured.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, as delays are expected.
Waka Kotahi-NZ Transport Agency Waikato system manager Cara Lauder said detours were “significant” and encouraged people to delay their travel, where possible.
“The southbound detour takes motorists south on SH2 from Waihi to Tauranga, then onto SH29 over the Kaimai Range, SH24 to Matamata, SH27 to Tatuanui and SH26 to Paeroa. Motorists travelling from Paeroa take the same route, in the opposite direction. ....

The hunt is on for black ice as Waikato motorists slip in freezing conditions

That’s why bridges get colder and icier quicker.
Black ice is very difficult to identify in the dark, and it can be harder to predict than snow is, Lauder said.
“It’s a tricky one, because you can get it in a very isolated little pockets of cold, that’s not necessarily in the forecast, and it’s not obvious to people.”
The agency says they won t always know where and when ice will form, because it’s based on a forecasting system.
Waka Kotahi monitors the forecast, checking at 4pm the night before.

Nature serves up polar blast right on time for mountain town

The Department of Conservation National Park Visitor Centre was reporting a couple of centimetres of “pretty gorgeous” snow on the ground at Whakapapa Village and while visitor traffic was light early on, the centre said, traffic up the Bruce Rd had been constant on Monday.

Ohakune businesses were revelling in the prediction of a good dumping of snow on Tuesday.
“If you get heaps of snow too early, everyone gets excited, but you get more rainstorms that wash it away, so it’s a bit of a tease.”

Snow, hail and polar cold temperatures as Antarctic blast hits New Zealand
An Antarctic blast has swept up the South Island, bringing freezing temperatures, dumping snow and grounding Air New Zealand flights, is now moving over the North Island.
With snow blanketing much of the south, leaving numerous highways closed and even falling to sea level in Christchurch overnight, the focus is now on the north, which is starting to feel the brunt of the polar air.
