School officials encouraged her to apply for the scholarship, which awarded her $1,000 toward her college of choice. Josephine said she has not yet decided where she will attend, but she is considering majoring in business or engineering. The scholarship competition is open to students in grades four through 11. Only one student per school can apply, and scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75. Scholarships are awarded solely on academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion. ....

For the fifth year in a row, Oscar Adams Elementary School is the only school in the district that has had a student recognized as a Carson Scholar in Alabama. For four of those years including this year that student has been selected for national recognition. Fifth-grader Xylia Scott has been chosen for the honor for the 2020-2021 academic year. She was one of just three students in Alabama recognized for the accomplishment. “I was really excited and also surprised,” said Xylia about receiving the award, “but I was really happy.” Carson Scholars is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 by pediatric neurosurgeon and former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson. The award began in 1996 and through the years has been given to 10,000 students. ....
April 8, 2021 Sussex Academy junior Mikayla Dayton has been selected as a 2021 Carson Scholar. With this honor, Dayton will receive a $1,000 scholarship that will be invested for her college education. The Carson Scholar fund awards scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Students must be nominated by a school educator, have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities.
