Johnson City Kiwanis Club presents children with adaptive tricycles


A local club’s focus on children brought three wheels of fun to two youngsters this week.
Johnson City Kiwanis Club members presented Raef Hammerbacher, 10, and Carson Sanders, 4, with AmTryke Adaptive Tricycles on Tuesday.
“Since our focus is on kids, it’s an excellent way to demonstrate that commitment to helping children, and particularly those most vulnerable, and particularly those who can’t go out and ride a regular bicycle,” said Kiwanis Club Lt. Gov. Howard Smith.
The AmTryke tricycles are designed for people who have limited muscle strength or developmental coordination and who might otherwise not be able to ride a bicycle. The tricycles are adjustable, and can be modified as the user grows. ....

The Urbana Police Division received a Walmart Local Community Grant in the amount of $4,500 to purchase an enclosed Forensic Ductless Workstation for criminal investigations. The unit makes evidence testing safer for officers.
The Air Clean Ductless 600 Workstation protects officers operating the system from toxic vapors, fumes, powders, particulates and smoke, as they process or test evidence. A man in Florida was bitten by a shark and returned to his home to await paramedics, according to audio of an emergency call.
The 39-year-old, who has not been publicly identified, was swimming on Tuesday off the coast of Siesta Key, a barrier island in southwest Florida located near Sarasota, when he was bitten by a shark. After walking home, a woman dialed 911.
“It’s an emergency,” the woman told the dispatcher. “He made it home, he was swimming in the ocean. … There’s blood all over my house.” ....
